Happy Tails – K9 Deputy Wilson on patrol!

When Wilson first arrived at Solano County Animal Care as a stray, his future was uncertain. He had the kind of energy and excitability that can be overwhelming to potential adopters, and after months of sitting in the shelter waiting to be chosen, it was starting to seem like no one would be willing to take a chance on him. Luckily for Wilson, one visitor was about to change his life forever!

A representative from Hearts for Paws Rescue was visiting the Solano shelter when she noticed Wilson, and seeing his potential, adopted him that same day, determined to help him find a better future. With Wilson in tow, the representative headed back to Davis, California, and began searching for his perfect placement.

Before long, Wilson’s unique personality caught the attention of the rescue’s founder, who was familiar with SDF’s mission. Seeing Wilson’s high toy drive and playful demeanor, the founder realized he just might have what it takes to thrive in a working dog career, and reached out to SDF to see if he could be a good fit for our program.

Soon after, Wilson made the journey to our National Training Center in Santa Paula, California, where his larger-than-life personality quickly won over our staff. Described as “spicy,” fun to work with, and full of character, Wilson was always ready to play, learn, and engage with his trainers, making him a joy to train.

Wilson’s intense drive and love of the game made him a strong candidate for disaster search, but when a routine medical screening revealed a condition that could pose challenges in the physically demanding world of Urban Search and Rescue, we knew a less physically rigorous career was in his best interest and began exploring alternate paths for him.

Fortunately, his enthusiasm and toy motivation made him a promising candidate for a variety of alternative working dog careers, including detection work. Detection roles typically require less jumping and climbing than disaster search and rescue, making them a good fit for dogs like Wilson who are better suited for low-impact careers. With that in mind, our team connected with our career change partners at Sector K9 to explore new possibilities for Wilson’s future!

In August 2024, Wilson was accepted into Sector K9’s detection program, where he began training for bed bug detection. He tackled this new opportunity with the same spirited attitude we’d come to know and love, but ultimately, it wasn’t quite the right match. Sector K9 went back to the drawing board, and Wilson was soon matched for a new career that would make the most of his unique abilities and temperament.

In April 2025, Wilson headed to Texas, where he officially began his new career working alongside Deputy Valdez of the Crosby County Sheriff’s Office! As a valued partner in the field, Wilson will now help serve and protect his community in this important role.

From overlooked stray to search dog candidate, bed bug detection trainee, and finally to a deputy’s trusted partner, Wilson’s journey is proof that there’s a perfect place for every pup, sometimes they just need a helping paw along the way. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Wilson, and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way!
