When Canine Candidate Chad first arrived at SDF from Mississippi, his future was uncertain. Routine medical screenings revealed that he had been shot with a shotgun early in life—a heartbreaking past that left SDF staff determined to give him the love, safety, and second chance he deserved. While disaster search proved not to be Chad’s ultimate calling, his intense drive, bubbly personality, and exceptional nose were destined for a different kind of life-saving work.
Today, Chad has officially graduated into a vital new career path: serving as an environmental detection dog for the City of Flint, Michigan! His specialized mission? Sniffing out Escherichia coli (E. coli) in local water systems to help protect public health.

For generations, E. coli—a bacterium commonly found in the intestines of warm-blooded organisms—has served as a primary indicator of fecal contamination in water supplies. While many strains are harmless, pathogenic strains can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, kidney failure, and dangerous outbreaks when introduced to municipal drinking water or urban waterways. Traditionally, identifying E. coli requires time-consuming water sampling and laboratory culturing, meaning contamination can persist while technicians wait for test results.
