Bo’s journey to the Search Dog Foundation began in Missouri, where he was discovered wandering through a Taney County neighborhood and brought into the local animal shelter in Hollister. Recognizing that the energetic pup possessed an intense drive that was far too much for a normal home, a local dog rescue advised the shelter to contact SDF. During his initial evaluations, Bo had a blast with every test, thoroughly entertaining his evaluators with animated, high-flying leaps into the air the second he was released to hunt for his toy. After officially being accepted into our program, Bo caught a ride out to California with our transport partner, Four-Legged Kids Bus, to begin his exciting new life. 

 

Upon arriving at our National Training Center, trainers quickly realized that while Bo may be on the smaller side, he has the incredible hops to clear a six-foot fence and a booming bark you can hear from miles away. Because this beautiful, spunky boy has drive to spare, early training focused on channeling his high arousal levels into a more focused, alert state, teaching him to pinpoint odor and bring his energy down a few notches. Naturally confident on the rubble pile, Bo proved to be an incredibly strong, headstrong USAR candidate, well-suited for disaster search. We are thrilled to see this confident boy thrive as he fulfills his true destiny doing a job he absolutely loves. 

 

Matching Bo’s vibrant, high-flying spirit is his handler, Rebekah Drews. From a young age, Rebekah’s parents instilled in her the importance of serving others, inspiring her to pursue a career defined by service, sacrifice, and personal challenge. Though she never thought she could become a firefighter, her father was her biggest champion, constantly encouraging her and reminding her that she was strong enough to take on any challenge. With his backing, Rebekah began her journey as a Fire Explorer for the Downey Fire Department at just 15 years old. Tragically, her father passed away unexpectedly in 2020. Honoring his legacy, less than a year later at just 21 years old, Rebekah was officially hired as a firefighter for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Today, she proudly wears her badge in memory of the man who taught her how to love others more than herself. 

 

Rebekah’s path to the canine program started during her probationary period when she worked closely with SDF handler Nick Bartel and Search Dog Six at Fire Station 58. Having grown up in a family that regularly rescued cats and dogs, she felt an instant connection to SDF’s mission and began volunteering at canine trainings in Del Valle. Witnessing the immense love and passion of the canine teams inspired her to pursue the path herself, ultimately leading her to fulfill her dream career of becoming a canine handler. 

 

Rebekah first met Bo during her training at SDF and fell instantly in love. Bo’s bright, bouncy, and high-energy drive perfectly mirrored Rebekah’s own personality. They bonded immediately during their first collaborative toy play session, where Rebekah realized she had found a partner who matched her high drive and passion. Spending evenings together at the Handler’s Lodge only sealed their connection. Hearing Bo’s story of transforming from a shelter dog into a life-saving rescuer deeply touched Rebekah—in many ways, she felt the fire service had rescued her, too, giving her a beautiful purpose in life. Together, they are two high-energy, silly, and passionate beings perfectly aligned to serve others. 

 

Rebekah and Bo were officially paired on July 18, 2026. Looking forward, their short-term goal is to achieve their official certifications so they can deploy internationally to disasters alongside their USA-2 task force teammates. Long-term, Rebekah envisions a lifelong partnership with Bo full of hard work, impactful disaster deployments, firehouse cuddles, and plenty of runs on the beach. We are incredibly proud of this pairing and cannot wait to watch them make a difference in the world together.
