A first responder committed to aiding his community, Keaton Rogers discovered his passion for canine handling after observing a canine team during his probationary year at the Oklahoma City Fire Department. Witnessing the bond between handler and dog, and seeing the canine work sparked his interest, which solidified after attending practices. He learned about SDF through two fellow task force handlers and decided to apply for the training program.
Keaton’s first impression of canine Bubba was being warned by trainers that “you better be ready, he is crazy,” which initially made him nervous. However, during his two-week training visit, Bubba surprised him by revealing a calm demeanor off-duty. He recalls, “When I got paired with Bubba the first night back at the lodge, Bubba just curled up in my lap and wanted some belly rubs. Not a bit of crazy in this guy until it’s time to go to work. Just how you want it to be!” When trainers complimented Keaton on his patience with Bubba, he knew they would probably end up partners.
Keaton’s short-term goals include building a strong bond with Bubba and preparing him for certification. Long-term, he aims to travel the country with Bubba, continually improving his handling skills while helping Bubba become the best search dog possible, ultimately building an unbeatable bond and assisting those in critical need.
Bubba was raised by a Labrador Retriever breeder who hoped to train him as a competitive hunting dog, but although Bubba loves to hunt, loves people, and loves life, he didn’t love hunting for birds. SDF canine recruiters Kellee & Tim Matthews met and evaluated Bubba and shared that he was an awesome dog whose mind was even faster than his body!
At our training center, Bubba showed himself to be a sweet boy with a ton of energy. While he loved to move his body and chase his toy, he also enjoyed snuggling and spending time with his trainers. Bubba was a very polite boy, so trainers worked with him to teach him that he was allowed to bark and that barking produced his toy. He also learned to be pushy and physical in play and had a blast adapting to that idea!
Bubba enjoyed learning to bark at the hidden person in barrel field searches. He had a great bark alert—rapid and intense—and was pleased to discover that barking here produced his toy and a fun game of fetch! This boy was a ton of fun for our trainers to work with, and we were excited when Bubba was partnered with Keaton Rogers of Oklahoma Task Force 1 (OK-TF1) on July 19, 2025.
Bubba returned to Oklahoma City with Keaton and the team continued to build their bond and improve their skills, focused on achieving state certification, which enables them to deploy with OK-TF1. In February of 2026, the team traveled back to California where they reached their goal! The next time a disaster occurs in the Midwest, Bubba and Keaton are ready to answer the call! Until then, they continue to train regularly with their task force teammates and advance their abilities as a deployable team.
