Brock Bybee grew up in a household where his father was a cop and his mother was a teacher, so service to others was imprinted on his everyday life. Six years into his fire service career, Brock seized an opportunity to join Oklahoma Task Force 1 as a canine handler, combining his love for dogs with his commitment to service.
He learned about SDF through his canine coordinator, who had previously worked with an SDF dog. Brock’s first impression of his new canine partner, Cam, was observing his incredible search capabilities and boundless energy. Watching Cam work for the first time solidified Brock’s hope for their match, recognizing Cam’s consistent performance.
Brock’s short-term goal is to continue to train and bond with Cam so they can achieve certification in order to be deployable. Long-term, Brock says his goal is to “make the biggest impact we possibly can on the community and do the work we love to do.”
When Cam’s owner fell ill, they made the difficult decision to find Cam a new home. Unwilling to surrender Cam to an animal shelter, his owner sought help from the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR). The rescue accepted Cam into their care and, upon completing his assessment, noticed that under “preferred toys,” they had checked every box next to every kind of toy on the list! They decided this busy boy would definitely benefit from having a job. Luckily, DVGRR is one of SDF’s rescue partners, so they were familiar with our evaluation process and quickly went to work shooting videos of Cam, which earned him a trip to our campus!
At our training center, Cam quickly progressed from drive work to learning to alert at a bark barrel. He immediately picked up on the alert game and steadily moved on from small to large barrel fields. Trainers remarked that even during his performance screening, Cam displayed a beautiful hunt, loved the rubble, and had no problem transitioning to search for victims on the rubble pile.
In addition to being a smart and capable student, Cam’s effervescent and joyful energy makes him a delight to spend time with. Trainers adored this fun, boisterous boy, who graduated from search training and was paired with Brock Bybee of Oklahoma Task Force 1 on July 19, 2025.
