Canine teams deploy to Southeastern United States ahead of Hurricane Idalia

On August 28, 2023, two SDF-trained canine disaster search teams, Kristi Bartlett & Ivan from Virginia Task Force 1 (VA-TF1) and Chris Cook & Ridge from Virginia Task Force 2 (VA-TF2) deployed to the northern Florida area along with their teammates ahead of Hurricane Idalia. Having rapidly strengthened from a tropical storm, Idalia became a major hurricane before making landfall in northwestern Florida.

In addition to the SDF-trained teams deployed, federal task forces from all over the United States, including Missouri Task Force 1, New Jersey Task Force 1, New York Task Force 1, Pennsylvania Task Force 1, and Texas Task Force 1, responded to stage before the storm hit land, ensuring resources were in place to assist in its wake. In addition to the high winds and destruction that comes with the storm itself, authorities also braced for storm surges and flooding in its wake.

Thankfully, the anticipated damage did not materialize, and the teams were not needed this time. During the time they spent at a convention center during the deployment, canine teams set up training searches, hiding members of their task forces and letting the dogs search so the dogs stayed engaged and happy. The teams may not have been utilized on this deployment, but they were ready. Preparation is everything in our line of work and we are grateful that you have helped make that possible for our teams.

Thank you all for being Part of the Search!
