Two SDF canine teams search collapsed building after Tijuana landslide

Baja California Task Force 3 (BC-TF3) members Fidel Gomez & Gemma and Luis Garcia & Montecito responded to a landslide in the Sanchez Taboada area of Tijuana. The canine teams were dispatched within ten minutes of the 911 call when it was reported that the landslide had collapsed a building with one person believed to be still inside.

Fidel sent the following statement about the searches:

“Luis and Monte had the first run. Monte covered the area in a very short time and didn´t show any interest. As the heat was getting stronger, Fidel and Gemma searched the area and Gemma didn´t show interest. After the canines did their job, word from the neighbors stated that the suspected victim left early, and they had a chance to call him and confirm he was out attending personal matters.

It was a great exercise for Monte and Gemma! They did an amazing job searching and most important letting Luis and Fidel know that no live victim was trapped under the debris. We acknowledge the opportunity that National Disaster Search Dog Foundation gives us to have in our city a great pair of highly trained search dogs that are always available when needed.”
