Two canine disaster search teams trained by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation have been deployed to Texas to assist with life-saving rescue operations following catastrophic flash flooding across the region.
SDF-trained search teams Steve MacDonald & Molly and Adam Schaaf & Dodger have mobilized alongside their teammates from Nebraska Task Force 1 (NE-TF1) to support local emergency responders in the hardest-hit communities.
The deployments come after days of relentless, pounding rain that dropped up to 28 inches of water in Uvalde County and raised the Guadalupe River by more than 30 feet in some areas. Coming in the middle of the night, the historic flash floods have tragically resulted in two reported fatalities and forced hundreds of swift-water, boat, and helicopter rescues. With rivers at historic levels, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that more than 2,000 first responders have been deployed to the area amid dangerous weather conditions.
In large-scale flood disasters, structural collapses and debris fields create highly complex and hazardous environments. The specialized skills of canine search teams are vital for rapidly clearing debris piles, flooded structures, and rough terrain to ensure no survivors are left behind.
Our thoughts are with the people of Texas and the families facing this disaster, and send our deepest wishes for safety and strength to them, Nebraska Task Force 1, and all the first responders working tirelessly on the ground to bring hope to these communities.
Stay tuned to SDF’s social channels for updates on this deployment.
